Built 1903 at Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij, Rotterdam, The Netherlands (yard nr 2). As the yard of newly-formed R.D.M. was under construction at the time, the ship was actually built on the slipway of Maatschappij ”De Maas”, Rotterdam.
Dimensions 42.9 x 7.1 m. Tonnage 338 grt (as delivered). Triple-expansion steam engine from the yard Power 387 hp, speed 9 kn. Launched 15 November 1902. February 1903 delivered as ZARA to Società di Navigazione a Vapore Zaratina, Zara, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now Zadar, Croatia). Participates in the mail service of the Österreichischer Lloyd. 1909 transferred to newly-formed Österreichische Dampfschiffahrts-Aktienges. »Dalmatia«, Trieste, Austro-Hungarian Empire. Zaratina was one of the founding companies of »Dalmatia«, which managed its day-to-day affairs from Zara. Some time after the outbreak of the First World War, when regular ferry services came to a standstill, put into lay-up. 1916 hired by the k.u.k. Heeresverwaltung (army). Used as a transport between Fiume and Albania. 1918 after the demise of the Austro-Hungarian Empire put under control of the Allied powers. In 1921 the ZARA is registered in the name of »Dalmatia« Parobrodarsko Društvo na Dionice, Split, Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (or Kingdom Yugoslavia). It’s the same »Dalmatia«, now re-established as a limited company under Yugoslav law. 1923, through a merger with the former Ungaro-Croata company, the ship is transferred to Jadranska Plovidba D.D., Sušak, Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Renamed HVAR, port of registry Split. 1941 seized by the Italian occupation forces. Renamed VOLOSCA. 9 September 1943, after Italy’s surrender to the Allied forces, beached at Poreč to prevent her from falling to hands of the Germans. Soon after refloated to serve the German forces. 1947 transferred to Jadranska Linijska Plovidba (Jadrolinija), Rijeka, Yugoslavia. Renamed HVAR, port of registry Split. December 1948 completion of repairs at Kraljevica. Reclassed 100A1 by Lloyd’s Register. Tonnage now is 404 grt.6 April 1965 arrived at Split to be broken up by Brodospas (apparently not known to Lloyd’s Register; 1970 deleted from the register book). |
